Many online users are unforgiving and very skeptical about advertising and promotion online. They think of Myspace or Facebook as their own personal space, so invading it needs to be done with care and transparency.
Other than the direct marketing to their consumers, social media marketing has the secondary benefit of helping search engine rankings. How a search engine determines a particular set of results based on a given keyword is at least in part, influenced by the amount of incoming links to that site. Social media marketing can, and if done properly, will create additional one way links to your site or network or websites.
